If you are planning a kitchen remodel for the first time then I really appreciate how stressful it can be. Apart from the many ranges and styles of kitchens available online and in free brochures ?to get ideas and inspiration from there are some harsh realities that you need to know. Unfortunately, having done a number of kitchen remodels the later far more successful and easier than the earlier ones I have learned a number of things which I think are vital for those new to kitchen remodelling need to know if they want their kitchen remodel to be a fairly simple operation. I list the key factors of a good kitchen remodel as follows:
Most of you will read this and probable say but I already know that and you are right. However, there is real thorough planning where you cover every possible detail and plan for potential problems which is differing from having a few ideas in your head, alot of kitchen ideas and a basic kitchen plan. Believe you me the planning process of kitchen remodels is so important that it will not only save you time but also money and stress. When planning you kitchen remodel you need to think about the following:
This may seem like a stupid and simple question but I am amazed at how many homes and even small businesses such as take aways have few stop taps and some cases just the mains stop tap. If you don’t have sufficient stop taps in the kitchen and have a problem such as leaking pipe it means you will have to lock off the mains system cutting off all the water to the home which means no hot water, central heating and running water until the problem is fixed. I learnt the hard way during my first kitchen remodel when a pipe burst in the kitchen during a very cold spell and I had to turn off the mains water stop tap which also caused further problems with the central heating due to the drop in temperature and the freezing of pipes!
A friend of mine, who in his rush to move into his new home, decided not to take my free advice about planning his kitchen remodel throughly and in detail, informing me ‘I don’t have the time, I’ll get it sorted, no worries, may be next time’. As he solely focused on getting his kitchen fitted and relying on advice from a small kitchen business he had not planned the necessary steps for his pipe work to be fitted exactly where he needed it. In his old kitchen his cooker was in the corner where as in his new kitchen he was installing his new hob on another wall in the middle. This meant that his gas pipe needed to be moved. However, in his rush to have his kitchen fitted he had his floor tiled so the kitchen could be fitted on top of the tiles before moving the gas point to the other wall where the new hob would be. Where the pipe should have been fed under the floor boards to the new location it had to run along the wall which caused more work and complexity when fitting the kithcen units thus costing more time and money.
Copper may cost more but give me it any day over plastic piping. I have seen on a number of occassions plastic pipes cause so much damage due to the push joints on plastic failing where copper would be so much more superior as a material. Also when pipe work can be seen copper looks so much nicer than plastic!
An extractor fan which uses air from outside is much better and more cost effective than using an extractor fan with carbon filters that must be changed regularly to be effective. However an extractor fan which sucks in air from outside needs a pipe that leads to an external wall and therefore should be on an external wall or very close to one otherwise you will see a pipe above your cabinets which doesn’t look particulary appealing. This is where using an extractor fans with carbon filters excel they can be placed anywhere. If you are not bothered about the additional cost of changing carbon filters and plan to have it in a location away from an external wall then it is the better option.
Are my kitchen walls in a good enough condition to simple paint them? I have seen kitchen walls in my time old and even recently plastered that have more bumps and bends then a country valley! Such walls needed to be rectified and made smooth and flat by a good plasterer before you paint, or should be tiled. I have seen people paint on walls that are not straight and flat in the hope that the paint may cover up somehow the uneveness of the walls! It doesn’t work! Replaster or tile!
I love Italian porcelain tiles. They are thick, strong and robust. They will last a life time and still look beautiful however… Thick porcelain tiles Italian or otherwise are a nightmare to drill into. I have wasted so many drill bits along side other work collegues that I am sure we made the DIY stores we frequented rich just because of our purchasing of drill bits! Cheap ceramic tiles break often so buy extra as you will need them!
I was ask this recently what is the difference between cheap and expensive paint. What is the difference? It depends on the quality of the product not the price? I buy alot of paint from a paint recylcing place in my home town which will mix whateever colors to your taste using expensive and cheap paints. I have found that they are as good as expensive paints that are branded as top quality. What I always do in order to use less paint especially on newly plastered walls is wash the walls with PVA bonding mixed with water and then add a little PVA glue to the paint so I use less coats of paint, saving time and money.
If you have a small kitchen do not go for dark coloured units especially if your lighting is limited. If you have large windows which allow you alot of sunlight then you can consider having darker cabinets. Spot lights really help in kitchens which lack natural lights and reflective surfaces such as the high gloss kitchen units also help to create the effective of more light due to their reflective quality.
Please, please use professional kitchen fitters or joiners who have sufficient experience and show you examples of their work. Don’t be fooled there is a huge difference between a professional kitchen fit and a standard kitchen fit done by the local joiner or your friend. Somone who specialises in fitting kitchens will be much better than someone who fits kitchens sometimes, hangs doors, builds bookshelves etc. Also, if you are using tilers, plasters and plumbers ask to see there work and ask around about them. I amaze at how poor the level of quality and service is being offered by so many workmen. I have suffered dearly financially due to poor workmen. And finally, if a workman is cheap beware! Cheap price poor quality! And don’t pay all upfront!
There has been so much said on this subject that I have very little to say. Work with a good kitchen designer to produce the kitchen the way you want it in terms of style, use, space and comfort. Read some of the other blog posts on this blog which discuss this more detail. Hope you enjoy this article until the next one check out more articles and kitchen tips at: http://kitchenremodeldesigns.blogspot.com/

Any form of home remodeling entails the entry of a bunch of strangers to your house. And it’s not just a onetime thing. Kitchen remodeling takes about six to eight weeks. This means that these strangers will be walking in and out for that long. Surely, they’re not homicidal maniacs, but it can get awkward. How do you deal with that?
Well, first thing to do is to stay out of their way. They’re in your house for a job, they probably think it’s awkward, too, especially if you keep hanging around. Be there to supervise but don’t hover. Let them do their job. And while they’re at it, you can take the breakables away with you. You wouldn’t want to be throwing a bitch fit when someone accidentally breaks that antique glass sculpture.
You’d be doing them and yourself a favor if you remove obstructions to their work. This includes things from furniture, to proper scheduling. They’d be able to finish the job faster if these things are properly arranged. It would be nice, too, if you make an effort to show benevolence, since they’re going to be there for six to eight weeks. You can communicate mainly with their lead person or your subcontractor.
Minneapolis kitchen remodel DIY project managers, for example (since there is a growing number of them), hire subcontractors to hire workers. They talk directly to the subcontractors for scheduling and instructions are friendly or at least jolly-nice to the workers. This maintains a warm but still professional working environment.
You should also be careful not to appear to them as a tyrant. These are construction workers hired to remodel your kitchen, not slaves bound to dedicate the best years of their lives building your tomb. These guys are professionals, so it’s probably unnecessary to explicitly lay down house rules. They know they should give you space and privacy but do let them use the bathroom. Minneapolis kitchen remodel DIY contractors or project managers usually assign the downstairs bathroom especially for their workers.
You don’t have to be like Diane Lane in Under the Tuscan Sun, but the strain of having strangers in your house, as Minneapolis kitchen remodel DIY contractors believe, can be reduced by the right combo of people skills, goodwill and proper scheduling. So, good luck!

Kitchen Remodeling DIY step by step
I have owned a construction company N.S.W.(National Specialty Workers) for over 13 years and for over 30 years i have been involved in many different areas of the construction industry from Residential to Commercial. When it comes to remodeling a kitchen i know first hand what needs to be done step by step. The knowledge that i give you is from years and years of learning my trade, to make my work stand above the rest of my competitors.
Let us first begin by thinking about these Questions, why am i remodeling my kitchen ? Is this a want or is this a need? I need to reinvest back into my home and update for resale value, functionality, and create a work flow design or more effective cooking surface areas.I want to renovate my kitchen because i want to stay in my home and neighborhood but my kitchen is outdated so i want it remodeled.
Just like any other home remodeling projects you will need money and how long you plan to work on your kitchen determines the costs.I have a slogan which is what i Create, Pattern, Construct and estimate by. It reads like this; Imagine It… Design It… Build It… For Less!(Note* Copywrite N.S.W. LLC. 1997 -2097)
There are several Questions to Ask Yourself Before Beginning a Kitchen Remodel.
How much will this costs? Do i need to refinance my home? How can i save money by performing some of the work myself? How can i rate my skill level? Can i act as my own general contractor? When do i need subcontractors to do their part? Do i have a design eye for the finished project?Do i need permits? While there are still many more questions stop right there and keep this in your mind, you can do this, it is not overwhelming, it is not finished until your satisfied.
Question: How much will this costs?
Answer: The costs of any project is simple how much do you want to spend? How much of the work will you perform? What do you see as you look into the kitchen as the finished project?
Come on, it’s your house let’s try it together. First turn the phone off, put the kids to bed, tell your spouse to do this with you together.Only when there is complete silence can you begin. Now close your eyes, remember your house layout where each room that is tied to the kitchen is placed.
Day 1. In your mind Imagine My Company, N.S.W. a team of professional guys, coming into your home spreading drop cloths, taping plastic dust protection up from ceiling to floor, dropping a big dumpster in the drive way or street, lifting your appliances to another room or to the landfill, removing the remaining items. Then your hear the foreman state it’s time to begin the demo, with saws and pry bars just like a surgeon is with his scalpel the N.S.W. Team is strategically removing cabinets, counter tops, Sheetrock, flooring, sinks, and everything else that gets in it’s way until you see nothing but wood studs, plumbing pipes, electric wires and hvac ducts. Now with your eyes follow the foreman up the ladder to the attic just above the remaining drywall ceiling. Notice how he is looking for the ceiling joists and what walls they are resting upon, interior or exterior, he also checks for braces supporting the roof. After noticing all of the pressure points from the roof down to the ceiling, down the wall, to the floor, and from the floor joist, to the columns and footers underneath the house he makes his material list. The N.S.W Team braces up the ceiling joists and removes the rest of the wood studs, and supports the ceiling with new heavy duty beams. Wow what a day! Demo and framing in just 1 Day, you tell your spouse. With your kitchen walls gone it is easy to …Imagine It Now…
Question: Do I have a Design eye for the finish project?
Answer: Everyone has a Design eye for the finish project and all they need is a little help from a photo a kitchen in a book, or a visit to a friends house oreven opening up your mind to our story.
Day 2. The day is pleasantly warm and you wake up to a soft knock at the door. Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Smith I have some coffee just the way you like it.I have the plumber and electrician here, wanting to get started, states the N.S.W. Foreman. You enjoy your coffee and notice what is happening in your kitchen today, the electrician is asking you questions about the lighting options and placement of your new appliance’s. The plumber starts changing your plumbing pipes and drainage lines to your new design. After the electrician climbs up into the attic and the plumber crawls underneath your house, the N.S.W. Foreman discusses with you the product selections you have chosen and ask you to think about any computer networking or cable TV wires locations in your new kitchen.
Question: How can i save money by performing some of the work myself?
Answer: You can ask a professional, chat in a DIY Forum, even buy a DIY book at home depot or Lowe’s. The place i like to send customers to get a feel for DIY projects, Such as painting, flooring, trim, etc… is HG TV. Everyone has undiscovered hidden talents and should use them to get a great satisfaction from working on parts of their project.Listen you do have some sort of job you are good at right? All you have to do is see it one time and then you have it in your mind. Tell yourself i can do this,I’ve seen it done before, I’ve read it before, I’ve thought of it before, just like the time when it happened on Day 3…
Day 3. As you awake to the early morning sounds you lay in bed and you recall how N.S.W. performed each step by step in your kitchen remodel. You say to yourself i can do the painting, and save this much, also the flooring, saving this much. After calculating each item of work you can perform you get out of bed and try to remember where you left your calculator when you get half of the way down the hallway then you hear a knock at the door. Hello I’m hear to inspect your kitchen remodel, calls out the building inspector. You open the door to see the N.S.W. Foreman pulling up with your coffee and this time he has an extra coffee and doughnuts, for the building inspector. Hello Joe How are you doing today? Great says the inspector taking a sip of his favorite coffee. I’m here to inspect the electrical, plumbing and hvac so you can cover up the walls with Sheetrock today, says the inspector. He ask the N.S.W. Foreman a few more questions then Writes in his notebook,”Passed Inspection, OK To Hang Sheetrock” and places the sticker on the permit placard. Just as the inspector walks out the door the N.S.W. Team of drywall hanger enters. the kitchen with their tools ready to hang the drywall. The N.S.W. Team measures each electrical outlet and light installing all of the drywall in a mater of hours.Wow! The Sheetrock really does make a difference, you tell the men at the end of the day, when can i paint?
For Less!! Question: When do i need Sub Contractors to do their part?
Answer: Sub Contractors need to be ready to work according to the project schedule. Sometimes a specialty contractor is needed to come and work on your kitchen remodel. They would set counter tops, install tile backspash, connect gas lines to relocated island stoves or ranges, network computer stations and cables TVs, etc…The products that you have selected at the concept of the project was paid for and ordered in advance. Without setting up a time frame to start and finish, the “hard to find materials” traveling from long distances will not happen in sequence causing customer and contractors relations to have a communication breakdown. If the homeowner is suppose to pay for materials on a certain date, they need to. Also if the contractor is suppose to finish their work on a certain date it has to happen.Whenever a homeowner takes on the responsibility to perform work on their project people are counting on them to finish their part so they can complete the next task. The paint has to be dry if they want their cabinets installed which brings us back to the closing of our story on day 4…
Day 4. Today you awake to the sound of big trucks pulling into your street driving toward your house. I think it is our special ordered items, you tell your spouse. Then you remember the long night you had painting all of your walls that color your friend selected. You look out of the window just in time to see the foreman from N.S.W. directing traffic around the big delivery truck.Opening the door you notice the N.S.W. Foreman inspecting for any shipping damage on every item. The N.S.W. Team carries in the cabinets inside and starts installing them according to their design layout placement. After only a few hours you notice the counter tops in place and the tile back splash installed. The floor installer is drives up andhas his crew with him ready to finish off your kitchen remodel project.
Later that night as you are reviewing your budget estimate and allowances, you happen to look around and notice the detail of everything in it’s special perfect place. Wow, I love my new kitchen! I love the way it looks! I love the way it feels! I love the way the counter top flows! I love the way it is inviting and welcomes you into it’s space. I truly Love everything about it!

With all the home improvement shows on TV these days, it’s easy to get the impression that anyone with minimal skills can tackle their own remodeling project. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you can’t or even trying to discourage you from it. Just be aware of your abilities and skill level before you begin any major undertaking.
A bathroom or kitchen remodeling project can get very labor intensive, especially if it’s going to involve a complete “tear out”. If you’re re-arranging fixtures in a bathroom, chances are good there’s going to be some plumbing skills needed as well. Careful planning before the project begins is the best solution to avoid being overwhelmed in the middle of the project. Knowing exactly what you are going to do and what the desired outcome is to be will help the project to be a success. The last thing you want is have your kitchen or bathroom tore out, standing in the doorway, looking at the mess, scratching your head wondering what to do next.
Hiring a contractor, The thought of this option makes some people cringe. Contractors are right up there on the list with auto mechanics and a lot of people feel like they’re going to get “worked over” before the deal is done. It doesn’t have to be this way. I think a lot of the problems stem from mis-communication.
The best contractor for the job isn’t necessarily the most expensive. There are a lot of specialty contractors that are good at what they do and offer their customers a fair price for their services. again , planning and knowing exactly what you want will be important for a successful project.
Here are some tips for using a contractor;
Get quotes from several different contractors
Ask for references
Ask to see Photos of jobs he has completed
Talk with previous customers
Don’t take anything for granted
Don’t assume anything will be done a certain way
Have all the details in writing
Whether you decide to DIY or hire a contractor , careful planning beforehand will keep your stress level down and help ensure that your kitchen or bathroom remodeling project is a success.
