How to Unplug Clogged Drains in Your Home

diy kitchens

I am often asked how do I get my drain unplugged to my kitchen sink, lavatory sink, water closet or other fixtures?

The most common answer is (it depends). The first and foremost step to take is to purchase three styles of plungers, a water closet plunger, a medium sized plunger, and a small plunger. The cheapest way a homeowner can unplug drains and eliminate the need for plumbing services.

With today’s new one and a half gallon water closets having the closet plunger is a necessary evil. When we did not conserve water we had water closets that used three gallons of water and in some cases up to five gallons. Flushing your toilet was a one time deal. Today that’s not the case and believe me it’s not what we are eating that’s causes the problem of flushing one time, it’s the amount of water helping to eliminate sewage.

All the plumbing codes were changed about ten years ago to conserve water, this is why drains plug up easier and cause such a cost for home owners. Example; you need to fill up your kitchen sink at least once a week to help eliminate orders that build up because food gets stuck around the blades in the garbage disposal and cause a bad odor.

The small plunger is great for your lavatory sink to help remove hair build up. The medium size plunger is good for your bathtub to help remove hair and broken soap pieces. By using these three plungers 98% of all all plugged drains can be fixed.

I do not advise any kind of chemical to help unclog any drain in your home nor in any commercial building with one exception of enzymes for commercial kitchen grease drain lines.

The green technique is to use a handful of baking soda mixed with a half cup of vinegar followed with a couple cups of boiled hot water.

If plunging your fixture with a plunger doesn’t work my next suggestion is to take apart your p-trap and clean out the drain next to the wall and up through the sink opening with a wire closet hanger. Always remember to be safe and use plastic gloves, safety goggles, and plenty of rags to clean up.

If your a DIY’er the next step would be to rent a sewer snake from your local rental shop. They will help you select the proper size of snake based on the size of drain you will be going through. If you cannot get the job done within the normall four hour rental time, I suggest hiring a plumber who specializes in unplugging drains.

Home Improvement DIY – Fun Family Projects

diy kitchens

Article by Jeremy C.W

Be it indoors or outdoors, Home improvement DIY’s are not only about adding functionality to rooms, hallways or yards. These days, DIY projects are fun filled activities for the whole family to get together. With the best intentions in mind, almost anyone can achieve professional-looking results without the use of a contractor.

DIY Home Improvement nurtures the significance of family togetherness coupled with a warm home mindset. Here are the Top 3 DIY Projects that you can do as a family.

- Painting the Kitchen -

Painting the Kitchen is one of the easiest and quickest ways to brighten up the “grayish” flavor room. A task like this when done alone could take up to several days to a week to complete. This is one of those projects that desperately requires the family’s help to complete.

(=Sideline=)Try coming up with fun painting themes like “Painting the Kitchen to be Two times Bigger” or “An Authentic Italian Style Kitchen”. This way, your family can enjoy a fun filled goal while you ensure your project runs smoothly as planned.

Another fun family project could be as simple as painting the kitchen cabinets. Everyone loves an “Instant Makeover”. This can be the perfect solution to lighten up dark cabinets or brighten them up with bold colors.

- Custom Build Something Useful for your Family Member -

Custom building something useful for the house is probably one of the best ways to get the family involved, especially your kids. It could be a secret surprise renovation for your Mum’s birthday or simply building a piece of furniture catered to your son’s or daughter’s fashionable taste.

(=Sideline=)Try getting your children involved by helping you to create certain parts of the project or furniture. Kids will be kids and we sometimes like to spoil them because we love them. If you are a parent building something for your children, listen to your their suggestions and let them quietly instruct you on what they really want.

- Build A Custom Piece of Furniture To Sell -

This exciting yet encouraging project may be a tricky undertaking. But if done properly, with conscious business mindset, family planning and execution; will most possibly result in a source of lucrative income. Tricky because of the greediness of human nature; where everyone wants so do a little lesser and take the bigger share of the profits when flourishing.

If you plan to custom build a piece of furniture. A good tip will be to reproduce design ideas from popular pieces of furniture you see in stores or magazines, and construct them to be even better! Better material, better finish, while adding your very own personal touch. In short, a high quality, custom built, good looking piece of furniture that will grab the hearts and bigger pockets of savvy home owners.

Home improvement DIY Projects are indeed a fun-filled family activity. Do-It-Yourselves aren’t always the easiest way to go, but it certainly provide a sense of all rounded contentment, enrichment and family adherence.

Thanks, and we hoped you’ve enjoyed this Home improvement DIY article.

Shopping Tips For Dramatic Home Improvement Value

To begin with, don’t assume that you have to have a general contractor to get things done. Many DIY stores can help you learn to do things yourself and they offer good prices to regular customers, too. Don’t turn over your project to a contractor along with an open checkbook. If you do this you will pay top dollar for everything. Your contractor will reserve any savings for his own wallet. Do the buying for your projects. Some contractors hate it because they can’t cheat easily. But it makes it a lot easier for you to control costs. Another thing you can do to save money is to look at your plans and see if there is anything you can reuse. For example bathroom cabinets are pretty standard but the current fashion is for cabinets to be 36 inches high. Consider raising the existing cabinet on some sort of platform or legs and painting it. It can save you hundreds of dollars. Kitchen cabinets can be either refaced or painted for a new look. Stone slab counter tops are really expensive.

But stone tiles that are usually used for flooring are cheaper. Butcher-block counters are both cheaper and really functional. They would be a great option for practical remodeling. For flooring look and see what’s on sale. There might be a perfectly acceptable option that would save you lots of money. Avoid plastic or vinyl. It is really bad at resale. Don’t add on to your house. Any addition that you make will add ridiculous costs to your project. You will also have to get more permits and regulators involved, too. Try to avoid wallpaper. It shows its age fast. There are lots of houses in this country that have dated wallpaper in kitchens that most potential buyers hate. So then the houses don’t sell. Stay away from wallpaper. Plain paint is easier and cheaper, and it can be touched up or changed any time you want, too.

Do your own painting. It’s not really difficult and your DIY store can help you with the details. It’s a good way to make a big change for a little money. See if you can build in storage into your space yourself. It’s really easier than you might think. Old TV armoires can make great closets or pantries now that TV’s are smaller and take up less room. Pick basic neutral colors for permanent fixtures so you can change your style any time you want. Hotels and apartments generally install white bathroom fixtures and change the decor around them when necessary. You can do this, too. It’s pretty easy to finish sheetrock, too. But because it’s messy many people think it’s a lot better to hire pros for this.

Hire plumbers and electricians for specific things and pay them when you see that things are working properly. It may be easy for you to put up a new light fixture or set a new toilet, but if you need a new electrical or plumbing line run it’s good to get a licensed pro. On a recent job we bought all the supplies to refinish a bath for 0. We still have to buy a couple of gallons of paint, but our old bath will soon have a new look from floor to ceiling. We are keeping the cabinet, the old white toilet and the shower. We are getting a new floor, new paint, and new lights. Anyone can make this happen and they can do it for a lot less money, too. You can get value if you try and have the space and décor you want.

Home Repair – DIY Kitchens

Article by Jack Blacksmith

Home repair in the kitchen can be cheaper than you think if you install your own kitchen cabinets and furniture. If you possess some home repair skills, you can easily save thousands in costs. Each cabinet comes with a guide to assist you through every step of the job. Just read the guide carefully to have a clear understanding of what is involved.

When you cabinetry finally arrives, check it for any damage. Be sure all the necessary pieces are there and that you have the necessary tools to do the installation, including screws and fasteners. Each one should be suited to your cabinetry, the right size, and the are you will be attaching them to

The tools you need for installation include: carpenter’s level and square; tape measure; drill and bits; hammer; chalk line; straight edge; masking tape; power screw driver; jigsaw; utility knife; step ladder; mitre saw; shims; bit sander; circuit tester; and furniture clamps. Also, you must consider safety issues, as cabinetry is heavy and bulky. You will not only need assistance, but also work clothing, solid safety shoes or boots and safety glasses. Keeping your area clutter and debris free is essential to avoid accidents.

Before you begin, turn off all utilities and appliances, including your kitchen’s electrical power by checking the circuit tester. Then move and unplug all appliances out of your work area. Don’t forget to turn off the oven’s separate breaker, too.

Before removing your sink, turn off the water and check this by turning the faucets on and off. Don’t forget the water connection for the garbage disposal, if you have one.

Using the same layout will make your job easier. Any changes in the layout will require that you move all the utilities, including water, electric and gas lines. However, this is best handled by a professional, as accidents can be deadly and cost a lot more.

The next step is to remove your current cabinets, but if you want to use your existing flooring, cover that first with thick cardboard which has been taped down. Otherwise, rip up the floor that you don’t want before the cabinets.

Don’t forget to empty those cabinets before removing them. Start with the top ones and then the bottom ones. Get rid of all moulding. If the flooring is to go, do it now. Once you have done this, fix any damaged walls before doing your new installation.

Finally follow your cabinetry instruction guide carefully a second time to be clear on what you have to do. Address any questions to the manufacturer’s customer service before starting.

Home Reconstruction: Do You Qualify to Diy?

diy kitchens

Home reconstructions can be a very costly proposition. Since a big chunk of the budget goes to labor costs, people who want to save money while reconstructing their homes seriously consider doing part or all of the reconstruction jobs themselves.  But before you lay down the new tiles in the kitchen yourself, find out if you are actually qualified to DIY, or risk making a home reconstruction disaster which ultimately will cost you more money.

Been There, Done That

One of the most important factors to consider in determining whether or not you can accomplish a home reconstruction project by yourself is if you have actually experienced doing the same task before. If you absolutely have no background on home reconstruction before, or even if you did, but not the specific job at hand, you definitely need to think twice.

If the project is a sensitive one and requires a precision hand to finish, like most woodwork accent jobs, you definitely have to pass and hire a professional instead. Working with wood requires an impeccable finish to be fully appreciated, so do not attempt to work on it yourself, lest you face the danger of wasting an expensive and otherwise perfectly good natural material.

However, if you need to install a wooden fence for example – this does not really need a perfect finish, and may be considerate enough to allow you some little misalignments here and there, or if you do commit a mistake, it is forgiving enough to allow you correct it without a hitch, then you can probably consider doing the installation yourself.

Furthermore, even if you do not have actual experience on a particular home reconstruction job, but have successfully completed another DIY project that required the same skill, or perhaps you have taken some classes that taught you more or less the same skills needed, then you can most likely pass up on a professional to do the job yourself.

Highly Technical

Putting up wallpapers is one thing, but if your home reconstruction project requires you to build a new bathroom, then this is an entirely different ballgame. Generally, if a project just requires simple tasks to complete like hammering, painting or some simple assembly work, this is for you. But for tasks which require numerous and complicated steps to complete, leave it to the professionals.

More so, if it involves the more critical elements of home reconstruction such as plumbing and electric work, this often legally requires professional certification and should pass the standards set by the local building codes and ordinances. If your reconstruction project involves work of this nature, better call a licensed professional to handle the job.

Proper Equipment

Let’s say you are already truly confident about successfully finishing a home reconstruction project by yourself, and are even eager to start, then the next important question to ask is: Do I have access to the necessary tools needed for the job?  I am not talking about the small tools which you can just buy in a friendly construction supply store down the corner; I am talking about the big guns – cranes, hydraulic pumps, drillers and the like. And even if you can actually rent one, if you do not have the knowledge and skills to use these equipment properly, then you’d have to abandon your DIY dream on this.

Safety Issues

Before undertaking any home reconstruction DIY project, it is very important to properly assess the risks involved. If the hazards are high, such as electrical and gas installations, never even attempt to begin. Or if you think that a particular tool needed for the job is quite risky to handle, then it’s time to call a professional.
