Choosing Your Kitchen Countertop

One of the many first world pains that we go through is the decaying of our kitchen counters. No longer do they look as shiny and eye-catching as they used to be. So the smartest thing to do would be to choose the material for the kitchen counter that is of good quality so that it may be longer lasting.

There are many types of material for our kitchen countertop that we can choose from. The best choice for a good kitchen countertop is stone because of its durability and also its natural beauty. Of course, there are other materials that you can look into like plastic laminate, plastic laminate and wood but these materials are not as long lasting so many would refrain from installing countertops made from thse two materials.

A type of stone, the granite, was once only to be found in high end kitchens, however, today it can be much more commonly found in many households. Granite is treated with a sealer which makes it resistant to stains. This treatment can last for a whopping 10-15 years. That’s 10-15 years of hassle free counter tops!

Quartz is also another type of stone that is used for countertops. Quartz counter installation is a very popular choice. The quartz has elegance and durability on its side. It’s definitely cheaper and better looking than the granite but is as durable as the granite too.

Plastic laminate is considered to be a very strong type of material which is not easily wearied out. Unlike granite which is only available in gray and black, plastic laminate is available in every color you could ever think of. However, you must remember not to put any hot pots and pans on the countertop without the use of coasters because this material is easily burned or damaged by heat.

As for wood countertops, with all the popularity being shown to quartz and granite, this once very favored material has lost its prominence, however that does not automatically mean that it has lost its value. Normally wood counters would be made from rock maple which are varnished with a sort of mineral oil. This varnish protects the wood and keeps it looking fresh and new.

Kitchen Design Mistakes You Should Avoid in Your Home Interior Design Project

kitchen designs

Article by Joanne Granger

They say that the heart of the home is in the kitchen. This is where relationships and family life are built and strengthened. Even if it is made for the purpose of cooking, many people use the kitchen for eating and entertaining, too. Unfortunately they make lots of kitchen design mistakes in the long run, which can easily be avoided with these tips.

Many times there is a need for remodeling so that you can easily transform your cooking area into something that you can make the best use of in every occasion. A kitchen should be an inviting room that is at the same time highly functional in design. Many times all you need is proper planning in getting that very effect that you are after.

The three things you have to consider in kitchen design are work flow, lighting, and storage.

The kitchen space should be of a functional streamline and be easy to work in. The mistakes that people have in kitchen design are not that their cooking areas are open galleys, or have L shape or U shaped counters. It is that the sink, the stove and the refrigerator are not near enough to each other in the sense that they interrelate. Mainly, the three appliances should be connected with 20 feet distances in the form of a triangle. Shorter lengths make the room cramped and a longer length needs and adds too much unnecessary movement.

With regards to work flow, you need to avoid installing a very big island. While the island countertop is perfect in adding that extra versatility to any cooking space, you should make sure that it is actually in line with the size of your kitchen area. Also don’t forget that the bigger your island, the more time it takes to clean!

Lighting is an area that is frequently overlooked in kitchen design. Lights actually relate to the ability to work well in the cooking area. General and task lighting should be well balanced, along with some accents to set the mood and tone. Don’t forget to add either halogen or fluorescent lighting for best task illumination. If you don’t see well what you’re doing, you can’t do well your everyday tasks the proper way. Also try to install proper ventilation. You can easily find vents with lights that easily double as eliminating any excess and nasty odors from the cooking space and providing excellent task lighting while cooking.

Storage is another key component in any good kitchen design. There are many storage places in the room that go underutilized. Blank walls can actually have utensil rods on them for the used utensils and small pots and pans. For example you can easily use cabinets and drawers to stash away the tools that you don’t need very often, or those that are usually in the way. You can also add in various storage caddies to the blind corners that are not used at the moment. This allows you to declutter your place and maximize the available space.

There should be a space for each item depending on frequency of use. If the drawers for kitchen utensils are spread out, you will end walking around so much in the room. Seasonal items should have an out of the way place, and all the other things should be within reach. Universal design means that all rooms, as well as the cooking area, should be flexible and easy to use. There shouldn’t be too much lifting, reaching, and straining in your kitchen design.

By avoiding these kitchen design mistakes, you can ensure the best use of your cooking space which makes this room a welcoming and inviting place for your family and friends.

Coordinating Finishes With Black Kitchen Cabinets

kitchen designs

Black kitchen cabinets have become an increasingly popular trend over the last few years. It can be a very sleek and sophisticated look, but only if you do it right. Too many people decide they want black kitchen cabinets with no plan on how to coordinate finishes so the kitchen does not become too dark. However, with some simple finish choices, you can keep your black cabinet from overwhelming your space without it seeming too cookie cutter.

Hardware: Contrast the Cabinets

When you are working with black kitchen cabinets, avoid choosing black hardware as it will only blend in. Instead, choose a hardware finish that will stand out from the cabinets and complement them. Brushed nickel, copper and even brass can look beautiful next to sleek black cabinets. Simply choose the hardware finish that best fits your personality and the kitchen style you are going for.

Lighting: Choose What to Match

When it comes to lighting in a kitchen with black cabinets you have two choices of what to match: the cabinets or the hardware. When you want the lighting to feel subtle, it is best to choose a black finish so it blends in with cabinets. If you would prefer your lighting to make more of a statement, choose light fixtures in the same finish as your hardware. This will allow them to standout by contrasting the cabinetry while still feeling part of the design because it is a color that will be repeated.

Counters: Keep them Light

Black kitchen cabinets can be very overpowering in a room if you do not balance them with lighter finishes elsewhere. That is why when you are choosing kitchen counters, it is best to keep them light. That does not necessarily mean you have to go with white or tan unless you want to. Other color options can be light blue, green or even a stainless steel depending on the look you are going for. So long as the counters do not further darken the room and you like the way it looks, it is a good choice.

Flooring: Don’t Go Dark

Whatever you do when you are choosing flooring, do not go dark. Like countertops, the flooring needs to be used to lighten up the room. Stick with colors that are significantly lighter than the cabinetry and preferably stay neutral so you do not take away from the drama of the black cabinets. As for the material, you can use ceramic, granite or even wood can be beautiful with black cabinets.

Appliances: Stainless Steel

Your final finish to choose with your black kitchen cabinets is your appliance color. If your budget can afford it, stainless steel appliances are stunning with black kitchen cabinets and almost any other colors you have to go with them. If you cannot afford stainless steel, cover a less expensive finished appliance with a peel-and-stick stainless steel film that costs around a roll. The end look will be the same but for significantly less.

So when you are remodeling your kitchen with black kitchen cabinets, there is no reason to fear it looking too dark if you follow these steps. Just remember to add accessories to your kitchen that will put your personal touch on it. The end result should be a sleek design that is as unique as you are but still visually pleasing to those you entertain.

When buying a new house obviously one must start to think how to fill the interior space in the most practical way and also how to create an environment that will welcome and make the person feel really comfortable. One thing a person must keep in mind when opting for this step is to forget what other people are opting for when furnishing their homes and concentrate on personal needs, tastes and obviously budget. One must therefore consult someone or go through details by reading related articles to understand more what is eventually most practical for him/her. Below are listed important aspects one has to consider before starting to furnish a house.

Kitchen

The kClick edit above to add content to this empty capsule.

itchen is by far one of the most complicated rooms to treat due to the various aspects one must consider before thinking of opting for a new one. One of the initial steps that have to be taken before going around to see kitchens in various showrooms is to surf the internet and go through various catalogues to take note of various design ideas. This will help the person to have a clear idea of what style of kitchen and what design features to incorporate when making the initial kitchen design.

Obviously one has to decide what sort of kitchen layout best fits in the space available. Sometimes, there are no choices due to having some wall restrictions. The below are the basic kitchen layouts one can opt for;

The U-Shaped Kitchen

The L-Shaped Kitchen

The Island Option

The G-Shaped Kitchen

The Corridor/Galley Kitchen

The Single Wall/Pullman Kitchen

Obviously setting out the kitchen layout is the most important stage. This stage involves going through what tastes the person has and what sort of design features the person would like to be included in the kitchen design. Consultation with a kitchen designer is eventually the key to have a good end result.

Setting out a layout of the kitchen doesn’t stand nowhere on its own. One must take into consideration what is the best material to opt for and even what colour/s to choose.

Various kitchen cabinet door materials from where one can choose from are listed below;

Laminate

Polymeric Laminate

High Density Fibreboard (HDF)

Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF)

Veneered

Solid Wood

Tempered Glass

Furthermore, carcass material is mainly made of  melamine or laminate material.

After finalising the first kitchen layout and deciding for which material to go for one must also consider the type of worktop to be chosen. The below are the options available;

Hard Wood

Granite

Corian

Solid Surface

Quartz

Laminate

Each and every kitchen must obviously be equipped with appliances. These make the kitchen function and opting for good quality appliances can help the kitchen function well. Gaurantee, energy efficiency, brand reliability, etc. These are all important aspects one needs to consider before opting for a particular brand of appliances.

Main Bedroom

The main bedroom does not only represent a simple room where a person just sleeps. It must be considered a room that boosts a person for the next day. That is why it must be given a great importance in its design. Like all the other rooms it is important to go through various design ideas to see what style are we eventually after. Normally a person opting for a bedroom is also after storage space. Therefore, the main bedroom’s design must be based on the below principles;

Restness

Relation to a person’s character and tastes

Storage

We may think that setting up the main bedroom is only about placing the standard bedroom furniture (bed, wardrobe, bedside tables & chest of drawers) with the walls that make up the room and that is it. Well in reality there is much more to consider. Apart the design idea one must think of the floor space availability that will remain after putting the standard bedroom furniture. Will there be enough space to

put a queen size bed like I always had in mind

Open wardrobe doors

Put a TV cabinet, etc.

Some restrictions may start to arise when considering such things and that’s why one must consider the options to all these restrictions including;

The type of wardrobe that must be chosen (listed below) and the internal setup to accommodate all of the clothes and accessories one could have.

Swing Doors

Folding Doors

Sliding Doors

Walk In

Should the bed have storage space in it? If yes what sort of storage systems are now available? (listed below)

Underneath storage drawers

Hydraulic storage system.

What space is available for the chest of drawers? If there is enough, what sort of chest of drawers would be more ideal for you?

You had in mind to put a TV in your bedroom but you have no space for it? What options are available?

As one can see there may be more aspects to consider than we thought.

Spare Bedroom

If you have a spare bedroom, there are different things to consider when choosing furniture.  The following are some of these items.

First you will need to think about what you want to use the spare bedroom for.  A lot of people use it as a guest room for visitors.  You can think about whether you will want to have a bed in there.  Some people want to have it be able to be utilized as a guest room but do not want a huge bed taking up most of it.  You could then choose a sleeper couch, which can double as seating and as a bed for your guests.  Another idea is to have a daybed.  Still another choice is a futon.

What else might you use it for?  Think about whether you will need a lot of floor space such as if you want a place that you can do floor exercises while working out.  In that case, do not buy a lot of big furniture.  You might want to use it as a computer room.  You can buy a simple desk.  Another idea is to get a computer armoire so that the computer and its equipment can be hidden away, which would be great if your spare bedroom is a multi-purpose room.

You also need to think about how much you want to spend on the furniture for the spare bedroom.  Obviously it will first depend on how much money you actually have.  Think about who will actually see and use the room.  If it is only going to get use once a year when the in-laws come to visit, then you might not want to spend a lot.  If it will constantly be used, then you might spend more.

Also consider who will be using the furniture.  For instance, if it is to be a playroom for your kids at times, then you will want furniture that is safe for them, easy to clean and durable.  If you will have guests that always bring a lot of stuff, then you might want some drawers to accommodate them.  Of course you could also use it as a place to store some of your own extra things and can get furniture to accommodate that.

Consider how all of the different pieces will look together.  You may have it as a multipurpose room (i.e. guest room, computer room, playroom).  Even if they don’t match exactly, you want them to look nice together.

Take your time when looking for furniture for a spare bedroom.  The above tips may help you make this choice.

Living/Sitting Room

The living room is another part in our homes that nowadays people are passing a lot of time in it. One must therefore create a welcoming and comfortable environment in this room. The basic furniture that is included in this room is a wall unit/system, sofa, coffee table and maybe some other furniture like a sideboard but what furniture must a person exactly opt for when furnishing this room?

As in any other room we have to think of the floor space availability that will remain after putting the standard furniture. In doing so one can start to deduct certain pieces of furniture that were originally planned to be introduced. Below are listed the basic things included in this room and some points associated with each of them;

Wall Unit – Although it may seem to be the norm to put a large wall unit this may not be so for some people either because of space restriction or because of tastes. Some people may prefer to put just a simple base unit were only the TV and the decoder are put. On the other hand a person may prefer to put a wall unit. Obviously the setup of a wall unit depends on various things including also whether it is combined with the kitchen and dining section. If so obviously it should have a style and colour which complements those areas. Opting for a brand which does not only have standard compositions will help a lot to have the design and setup which a person may really prefer. The most important thing when setting a wall unit’s layout is to keep the design original, simple and which includes storage so as to store movie cases, music cd’s, books, etc.

Other Furniture – Pieces of furniture that may complement this room are for example a side board, lamp table, book cases, etc.  Nowadays, it is very easy to find that design that you will really like due to the vast selection of brands which are related to this area.

Sofas – The sofa is usually a focal point, the seating area most often used, and, if the wrong choice is made, the source of the most complaint. It’s important to choose the right sofa style and size for your design. You have several choices to explore:

Traditional sofa

Convertible sofa

Loveseat

Divan

Settee

Sectional sofa

Article by Alexander Sutton

If you’re remodeling or planning a new construction, chances are you’ve focused heavily on kitchen designs. It makes sense since most often parties and family time happen in the kitchen. Kitchen designs that allow you and your family to gather comfortably will work best. But how do you find those kitchen designs? Where do you even start?

First, look through home design magazines to get a feel for what’s current. You’ll see new innovations in kitchen cabinets, flooring and appliances. Then start to get an idea of what looks right for your style. Tear out pages that show images you like.

If you’re working with a contractor or builder, you’ll want to get his input right away. The sooner you get your kitchen designed, the better everyone will feel about the project. Often the kitchen will drive the rest of the living space around it.

If you want an eat in kitchen, speak up now. It’s hard to add features and space in after a room is finished, so think about your must have list and make sure you get everything you want. If eating together at a table in the kitchen is important to you, make sure that’s part of your kitchen design. Many families prefer the freedom of a kitchen island where everyone can gather around the cook, pull up a stool and chat. If you want an island, it needs to be built in now.

There are so many options to consider when planning a kitchen design. Your countertops can be any of hundreds of surfaces from granite to cement to everything in between. Your flooring has double the options and every imaginable color and texture under the sun. Narrow down your choices early based on a color palate you like. Toss out any that don’t fit your idea of home and stick with the dozens of choices that do. At least you’ll navigate more quickly when the choices are fewer.

Design your kitchen based on how your family lives. Do you sit down and eat most often or do you all grab something and run? Do you cook a lot or do you order take out five nights a week? You’ll need and want different things based on how often you will use your kitchen. Design around your lifestyle and add features like a built in desk for paying bills or a small under-counter fridge for littler ones who want to help themselves. And get the kitchen you’ll love to live in.

Key Elements of Good Kitchen Design Online

kitchen designs

Good kitchen design online implements several key elements:

Work Triangle – This is the distance between the stove, refrigerator, and sink. These are the three “focal points” of your kitchen, and together they form the work triangle. It’s important to think about the work triangle as you do your kitchen design online. Minimizing the distance between them and maximizing accessibility will make it easier to prepare food, cook, and clean.

I recommend taking a sheet of paper and making a rough sketch of the layout of your kitchen. Where is your fridge located in relation to your stove? Are they next to each other? Are they opposite each other? Where is your sink located? Could it be relocated to a more practical spot? Ask yourself these questions as you plan your kitchen design online.

There is no set in stone rule about where to place these appliances.

Just keep the work triangle in mind, use your common sense, and go with what feels right to you.

Space – Not everyone is blessed with having a large area for their kitchen. And not everyone can afford to take down a wall (or two). But it is still possible to maximize the space that you DO have for optimum convenience. Often all it takes is rearranging the layout of the kitchen, or buying more compact appliances that don’t take up as much space. Proper use of colors and decoration can also go a long way in making a kitchen seem larger than it really is.

If there are only going to be one or two people actively using the kitchen, you might not need as much counter space as you think you do. Use this space instead for something else, or to open up the kitchen and make it bigger.

Also, removing excess “stuff” and furniture that isn’t really necessary will also open up the space.

Aesthetics – Your kitchen is most likely the central hub of your home. When you really think about, you’ll start to notice that family members and visitors naturally tend to gather around the kitchen. Therefore, it’s important to make your kitchen a reflection of you by decorating it tastefully and creatively. A drab, dull kitchen can bring down the atmosphere of the entire house.

Feel free to express yourself and your tastes while planning your kitchen design online, but if you plan on selling your home in the future, you must also keep the potential home-buyer in mind. Avoid using any outrageous or unusual colors and themes. Try to keep it as tasteful as possible, while still adding your own personal touch.

How to become a pro in the kitchen

kitchen designs

When you are just getting familiar with cooking, be sure to stick to the measurements. Have your measuring cups readily available when baking or cooking. As you get more advanced you won’t even need to measure things, it will just come naturally. Learn to acquire good tasting skills. When you are preparing a meal, you have to taste it along the way, to make sure that it has the right amount of flavor and spices. Add more if needed to give your finished product a delectable taste.

Temperature is also important when cooking. Follow the required temperature in your recipe book. Making the temperature too hot can dry out the juices that are needed to make your dish moist. You may want to use a cooking thermometer, to help determine the right temperature. For first timers, in order for you to produce a well-cooked dish, you have to have a timer that will help you to determine when to take the finished product out of the oven or when to turn off the stove. You can save your dishes from becoming a disaster by investing in a timer.

Learning how to present a dish is very important. When you are presenting your dish, it needs to not only taste great, but also have an appealing look. Garnish your meals with edible decorations, to give it an appealing look. You can use a sprig of parsley or fruits and vegetables carved in different designs. Use a variety of colors to enhance your dish. When you are finished, you will be so proud of yourself that you will want to this all over again.
